Meet OFF THE BEATEN TACK FOUNDER James, also known as 'Jim' or 'Jimmy'
Jimmy is a Commercially Endorsed RYA Offshore Yachtmaster and professional skipper who has over 10 years experience working within the sailing industry. Jimmy says "there is nothing in the world I enjoy doing more than professionally skippering a yacht and sharing my love of sailing and the sea with others. I have a great passion for the sea and what I do, and I try to express that through the core values of Off The Beaten Tack".
Jimmy is fully licensed to skipper yachts or power boats up to 250 tons and is capable of sailing his yacht alone but loves to involve his guest crew and enable them to help sail the yacht themselves as much or as little as they wish.
Jimmy says "I gain huge personal satisfaction from seeing my guest crew enjoy their time aboard the yacht, teaching them to sail so that they too can experience the thrill of handling a large yacht at sea whilst enjoying life and nature in stunning locations in the same way that I do".
Over the last few years Jimmy has travelled the world and sailed thousands of miles in all conditions. He has a trans- Atlantic crossing from France to the Caribbean under his belt and has sailed North Sea routes to Norway, Andaman Sea & Gulf of Phuket, as well as deliveries in the Mediterranean from France to Turkey, and a wealth of experience cruising the Ionian, Aegean and Adriatic Seas.
In the winter months Jimmy offers sailing hlidays in Thailand, but has also delivered new yachts to clients around the world. He has also worked previously for specialist sailing holiday firms in France, Croatia, the Caribbean and Greece. Over the winter of 2017 and Spring 2018 Jimmy has been working as part of a team doing a full refit on the 1907 tall ship 'Irene of Bridgewater'

First Mate - Carla
Carla has sailed with Jimmy and Off The Beaten Tack for 3 seasons as First Mate and Hostess in the Greek Cyclades and Argo Saronic Islands as well as the Andaman sea and Gulf of Phuket in Thailand. Carla is a great cook, the perfect BBQ hostess, fun and attentive with a wicked ‘Yorkshire lass’ sense of humour. Carla’s role includes helping to manoeuvre the yacht when setting sails, anchoring and mooring in harbours. She’ll always be on hand to advise guests who want to get involved and lend a hand, and if you ask her very nicely she can even cut your hair.
When not sailing Carla works as a professional hair stylist in her home town of Sheffield.
Bookings Manager - Paul
Paul looks after OTBT bookings (as a willing, but unpaid volunteer) from his home office in Cornwall and monitors skipper Jimmy’s e-mails and communications whilst he is sailing.
Paul has sailed since a boy in everything from small dinghy’s up to a 150 foot topsail schooner. His varied sailing experience includes pottering around Cornwall and the Channel Ports to cruising in sea areas as far afield as Thailand & the Falkland Islands. He currently sails a 25 foot traditional Gaff Cutter ‘Little Millie’ in his home waters of West Cornwall.
When not dealing with Off The Beaten Tack enquiries Paul works with his wife Alison running their Cornish family holiday cottage letting business and B&B in the small town of Marazion, the gateway to the amazing island fortress of St Michaels Mount. Check out www.stmichaelscoastalcottages.com
Ships Dog Aella
Aella is friendly Greek Rescue dog of uncertain parentage who joined the OTBT crew in 2016. Aella has the Important role of keeping the crew motivated & fit by getting them to take her for walkies, going shopping together, digging holes on the beach, chasing sticks, guarding the yacht and preventing stowaway cats (or other furry friends) from coming aboard. She has been sailing since a pup (that’s 14 years in doggy years) and enjoys meeting new friends and being patted.
